International star Ewan McGregor will play the famous gambler Sky Masterson in the Donmar Warehouse's new production of Guys and Dolls, to be directed by the Donmar's award - winning Artistic Director Michael Grandage.
Guys and Dolls tells the story of a group of small - time gamblers and the ladies in their lives. Nathan Detroit bets his pal Sky Masterson that he can't make the next lady he sees fall in love with him, and when the next lady happens to be the prim and proper neighbourhood missionary Sarah Brown, the stage is set for an evening of high spirited entertainment, set to the toe tapping beat of Loesser's superlative compositions.
Ewan McGregor makes a welcome return to the West End since Little Malcolm and His Struggle Against the Eunachs in 1999. He is best known internationally for big screen credits such as Star Wars, Down With Love, Little Voice, A Life Less Ordinary, Trainspotting and Brassed Off. He also won huge critical acclaim alongside Nicole Kidman in Baz Luhrmann's musical movie Moulin Rouge. Michael Grandage's award - winning musical theatre credits include Merrily We Roll Along, Privates on Parade and the current critically acclaimed hit Grand Hotel.
Frank Loesser's score features classic songs such as 'Luck be a Lady', 'Sit Down Your Rocking the Boat', 'Adelaide's Lament', 'I've Never Been in Love Before', 'If I Were a Bell' and the wonderful title song 'Guys and Dolls'.
Historically a haven for writers, musicians and authors that first opened in 1865, the Grill Room today remains one of the most decadent English dining experiences in London. The glamorous jewel of Café Royal, its gilt-edged mirrors, beautiful hand-painted ceilings and blood red drapes create a scene of unique drama and opulence. Creating works of traditional English art in the kitchen is Head Chef Adrian Luckie whose seasonal menu is complemented by a daily list of gourmet dishes such as seared scallops with pickled ginger and Asian soy salad, fillet steak with plum tomato farci and fondant potato. In the 1930's fashion and portrait photographer Cecil Beaton declared The Grill Room "the loveliest room in London." We'd argue it still is.
