About Blithe Spirit
Theatre legend Angela Lansbury returns to the West End this spring in a new production of Noël Coward's Blithe Spirit at the Gielgud Theatre. She reunites with director Michael Blakemore to reprise her 2009 Tony Award-winning role as Madame Arcati.
Angela Lansbury’s stage and screen career spans seven decades but she is probably best known to millions as the much-loved Jessica Fletcher from the hit TV series Murder She Wrote. She has won 5 Tony awards, 6 Golden Globes and in September 2013, it was announced that Lansbury would receive the Honorary Oscar after 70 years' work in the motion picture industry. She hasn’t appeared in the West End since the 1970’s
She is joined in Blithe Spirit by Charles Edwards, currently in Downton Abbey as Condemine and West End regular Janie Dee as Ruth.
Blithe Spirit, first seen in the West End in 1941, concerns the socialite and novelist Charles Condomine, who invites the eccentric clairvoyant, Madame Arcati, to his house to conduct a seance, hoping to gather material for his next book. Whilst consumed in a trance, Madame Arcati unwittingly summons the ghost of Charles' dead wife Elvira. Appearing only to Charles, Elvira soon makes a play to reclaim her husband, much to the chagrin of Charles' new wife Ruth.
One husband, two feuding wives and a whisper of mischief in the air - who will win in Coward's unworldly comedy?
