Tickets for Dada Masilo's Giselle at Sadler's Wells on sale now!

South African choreographer Dada Masilo is set to bring her critically acclaimed African retelling of the Slavic legend of Giselle to Sadler's Wells this October for a strictly limited run. Having reimagined the 1841 classic, which is set in the Middle Ages, and presenting it as a courageously bold and modern take, Dada Masilo's Giselle is a must-see for all fans of ballet and modern dance interpretation.

What is the Giselle ballet about?

Marking Dada Masilo's fourth significant reinterpretation of a famous classic, Giselle follows a young girl who dies at the hands of a treacherous man that crossed her. As she is unable to pass through to the gates of heaven in piece, Giselle is transformed into a will-o'-the-wisp, an atmospheric ghost light commonly found in Slavic lore and fairytales (see Dvorak's Czech opera Rusalka) that serves to mislead travellers the wrong way and lure them into a deathtrap. Now as an eternal will-o'-the-wisp, Giselle's lifelong desire to dance can be fulfilled, having no time to perform in her short lifespan. Giselle does not learn to forgive.

What to expect from Dada Masilo's reinterpretation of Giselle

As in her previous reimaginings, Dada Masilo's Giselle is a feminist revision of the spectacular classic. Filled with visions of heartbreak, sadness, wrath, and retaliation, the ballet's subject matter may not be pretty, but you'll be blown away by its intense visuals.

Masilo has linked up with South African composer Philip Miller to bring you a brand-new score that is, in part, influenced by Adolphe Adam's original music. In addition to the usual, classical Western harp, cello, and violin, Miller also juxtaposes traditional African vocals and percussion to create an unforgettable audial experience. In terms of movement, Masilo has created an innovative new dance vocabulary with a group of dancers for the Giselle libretto.
