International opera star Bryn Terfel and Academy Award-winning actress Emma Thompson will reprise their roles as Sweeney Todd and Mrs Lovett in Stephen Sondheim’s gloriously gruesome musical Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

Following critically-acclaimed performances at New York’s Lincoln Center earlier this year, this sell-out staging comes to ENO in spring 2015, with just 13 performances from 30 March – 12 April.

Set in Victorian London, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street tells the story of the eponymous barber who seeks vengeance on what he sees as a merciless world by murdering his customers and, with the help of his landlady, the romantically inclined Mrs. Lovett, bakes their bodies into meat pies, which are fed to London’s avid and unknowing populace. Sondheim’s score pays homage to the music of Hollywood composer Bernard Herrmann. Highlights include “The Ballad of Sweeney Todd,” “Not While I’m Around,” “A Little Priest,” and “Pretty Women.”

#TheatreReporters: SWEENEY TODD REVIEW

The main dichotomy at play in Sondheim's musical thriller Sweeney Todd is horror versus humour.  On the one hand, Sondheim was influenced by cinema and intended Sweeney to be almost a staged horror film.  The mere proposition of a serial killer whose victims end up in meat pies is terrifying enough.  On the other hand, the book is filled with black comedy and a lighthearted view of murder, making the intensely dramatic moments all the more poignant.  Any production of Sweeney must balance these juxtaposed elements, luring the audience in with macabre humour before scaring the hell out of us.
