Award-winning '90s Broadway musical Falsettos has made its highly anticipated UK premiere this summer at the Off-West End's Other Palace.
Who wrote Falsettos The Musical? – Background on the show
Written against the backdrop of the AIDS epidemic by powerhouse duo William Finn and James Lapine, who are behind the recent musical adaptation of Little Miss Sunshine (Arcola Theatre), Falsettos first premiered as a whole on Broadway at the John Golden Theatre in 1992. It had previously run as two separate shows – March of the Falsettos (Off-Broadway, 1981) and Falsettoland (Off-Broadway, 1990) – before being combined into one.
The original Broadway production received seven Tony Award nominations and went on to win two for Best Original Score and Best Book. Two decades later in 2016, the show received a Broadway revival, which was nominated for four Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Musical.
What is the Falsettos musical about?
Finn and Lapine's hilarious musical Falsettos follows the story of a gay Jewish man named Marvin who has just left his now ex-wife Trina to be with his boyfriend Whizzer Brown. The musical takes a poignant look at the life of a modern family, also exploring the relationships with his son Jason, who is soon to have a bar mitzvah, and his psychiatrist Mendel and lesbian neighbours Dr. Charlotte and Cordelia. Despite the show's heavy subject matter at times, it manages to remain lighthearted throughout as it slowly drifts towards the ultimate heartbreaking ending.
Falsettos London Other Palace cast
The London cast of Falsettos will star Daniel Boys (Peter Pan, Avenue Q, Spamalot) as Marvin with Gemma Knight-Jones (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, The Lion King, Rent) as Charlotte. Laura Pitt-Pulford (Little Miss Sunshine at the Arcola Theatre) will play Trina. Joel Montague (Kiss Me Kate, School of Rock, Funny Girl) takes over for X-Factor winner and Strictly Ballroom star Matt Cardle as Mendel. The cast is rounded out by Natasha J. Barnes (The Twilight Zone at the Ambassadors Theatre, Cinderella at the London Palladium) as Cordelia Oliver Saville (Wicked at the Apollo Victoria, Knights of the Rose at the Arts Theatre) as Whizzer.
Falsettos will be directed and choreographed by Tara Wilkinson. Produced by Sellador Productions, the same studio behind 9 to 5 The Musical, American Idiot, Avenue Q, and Big Fish, Falsettos is set to premiere on the London theatre stage for the first time ever. It turns out love truly is timeless after all.
