Award-winning '90s Broadway musical Falsettos has made its highly anticipated UK premiere this summer at the Off-West End's Other Palace.

Who wrote Falsettos The Musical? – Background on the show

Written against the backdrop of the AIDS epidemic by powerhouse duo William Finn and James Lapine, who are behind the recent musical adaptation of Little Miss Sunshine (Arcola Theatre), Falsettos first premiered as a whole on Broadway at the John Golden Theatre in 1992. It had previously run as two separate shows  March of the Falsettos (Off-Broadway, 1981) and Falsettoland (Off-Broadway, 1990) – before being combined into one.

The original Broadway production received seven Tony Award nominations and went on to win two for Best Original Score and Best Book. Two decades later in 2016, the show received a Broadway revival, which was nominated for four Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Musical.

What is the Falsettos musical about?

Finn and Lapine's hilarious musical Falsettos follows the story of a gay Jewish man named Marvin who has just left his now ex-wife Trina to be with his boyfriend Whizzer Brown. The musical takes a poignant look at the life of a modern family, also exploring the relationships with his son Jason, who is soon to have a bar mitzvah, and his psychiatrist Mendel and lesbian neighbours Dr. Charlotte and Cordelia. Despite the show's heavy subject matter at times, it manages to remain lighthearted throughout as it slowly drifts towards the ultimate heartbreaking ending.

I really liked the set and the venue. The actors had beautiful voices but sometimes I felt like there were chances to evoke more emotion which were missed.

I have been to see many west end and broadway shows. I discovered falsettos around a year ago and when I found it it was being performed in London, I knew I had to come. I booked a performance for the last week and travelled down specifically for this show. Well, I was not in the least disappointed. It was everything I wanted it to be and more. I felt every single emotion whilst watching the show, “happy or sad?” That really is a question with no answer. Each cast member was amazing, they knew their characters to a T and brought the story of falsettos to life. I cried for most of the show because of excitement and sadness. I really hope the cast know how much they can help someone and effect someone with giving such wonderful performances. I give it 5 out of 5 stars, people will be wondering if it surpasses the original 90’s performance, or even the newer revival in 2017...well, I can say that this West end show is the best out of the three in every way, passion, talent, set, and the overall care for the production. This show is a quintuple threat...in the singing dancing, acting, music and the emotion in will have you feeling. Thank you falsettos! Lewis Brown, Glasgow

Amazing Cast

Rob Cover

Not the best rendition of this show. Off-key singing (making harmonisation among the cast quite awful), extremely weird and a strange mix of costuming, neither period (late 70s and early 80s) nor contemporary, giving the show a very very "amateur" look and feel.

Poor energy among the cast during the start of the first act (which is sad considering the Saturday night show often is the highlight for tourists, such as ourselves).. We had an alternate Whizzer who did not fit the role and who also (pretty obviously) had not been given enough time during rehearsals to get to know the part and create the chemestry there needs to be between Marvin and himself. Jason was plain and emotionless. There were a couple of lyrically- and staging-based mishaps throughout the show which was also unfortunate. Projections in theatre can usually be a little hard to get right which was very clear considering Whizzers heart was beating after his death. Furthermore, a couple of the songs felt a little rushed, although most of the harmonies were wonderful! Trina and the lesbians were great! Absolutely loved "I'm Breaking Down". A newfound love for Mendel also emerged as I've usually just felt annoyed with his behaviour and material, but here we actually get to see him be a human person trying his best to get through all the messy situations. To everyone who finds this review a little harsh, I am truly sorry, but Falsettos is one of my favorite musicals and I have very strong opinions about the material. Would love to see it again, but with the right Whizzer and another Jason. SPOILER: The fact that they kept Whizzer alive during "What Would I Do?" ruined the whole point of this song, and as this is such an important emotionally loaded part of the show, it would have been more powerful to stage this the way it's actually written.

Sad but funny and brilliantly performed

We were surprised to find this play; as tourists, we only leaned about the non West End productions from s local while seeing "9 to 5". I'm glad they told us! It's only the second show in Britian where we've seen a standing ovation (+90% of the audience leapt to their feet!) which was well deserved.
