Playing at the Barbican, the Olivier Award-winning Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre production finally has a roof - but with masterful performances from Adam Dannheisser, Lara Pulver, and Hannah Bristow, and thrilling choreography by Julia Cheng, it’s in danger of blowing it off. A lone fiddler (Raphael Papo), lost in the melodies of his trusty instrument, plays in an overgrown crop field. Nature claws at him - keen to let him know his place in the fragile ecosystem - he sways and breaths along with the notes that fill the air. Dreamlike the crop field rises, and he is suspended in midair. The field is now the titular roof.  It’s an ethereal opening fit for a fairytale. Brought to life by visionary set designer Tom Scutt, the beautiful opening makes the inevitable destruction all the more chilling. When Tevye (Olivier nominee Adam Dannheisser) appears minutes later, he brings the weight of reality that the fiddler, and the community, faces. They must scratch out a living without breaking their neck. Suddenly the majestic scene is brought into a new light - the pink sunrise still evident, but it can so easily become darker, a blood red. The fiddler is dancing with danger, but he dances nonetheless. It’s a balance, and one that he has seemingly mastered. It is here Jordan Fein draws comparisons with the fiddler, his production of the much-loved Broadway sensation, showcases the balance perfectly and is perfectly balanced itself. Never tilting to one extreme or the other, his production treads a fine line - never sentimental, never bitter. It avoids nostalgia and overt politics. Though modern parallels are easy to see - especially in the scene where a Russian mob attacks a Jewish celebration - Fein resists using his stage as a platform to preach or lecture.

Following a sold-out run at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, and a barn-storming performance at the Olivier’s, the multi award-winning production of Fiddler on the Roof has revealed its final casting.  Previously announced stars; Adam Dannheisser (Tevye), Lara Pulver (Golde) and Beverley Klein (Yente) - who each received an Olivier nomination for their roles - will lead the company. Joining them for the Barbican season are Natasha Jules Bernard as Tzeitel, Georgia Bruce as Hodel, Hannah Bristow as Chava, Ashleigh Schuman as Shprintze and Georgia Dixon as Bielke. The cast is further strengthened by Matthew Woodyatt, who appears as Mordcha and also covers the role of Tevye, alongside Dan Wolff as Motel, Daniel Krikler as Perchik and Gregor Milne as Fyedka. Michael S. Siegel plays Lazar Wolf, with Mark Faith as the Rabbi, and Toby Turpin as Mendel. Gareth Davies, Ed Bruggemeyer, Sue Appleby, Susannah van den Berg and Carys McQueen complete the vibrant village ensemble, with Raphael Papo stepping into the iconic role of the aforementioned Fiddler.

For those who couldn’t stay up late to watch the Olivier Awards because, have you ever stayed up past 10pm on a Sunday? Then don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. But boy, did you miss out on a great night of drama.  It was a year without a single runaway hit—no Harry Potter–level sweep or Cabaret–esque domination. Instead, the love was spread evenly across the board, with three productions - Fiddler on the Roof, Giant, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - each taking home three awards. And honestly? That’s a win for everyone. Theatre, like a good buffet, is best when there’s more than one dish to drool over. And with no one production hogging the limelight, it allows for a richer celebration of creativity, and a wider range of performances getting their flowers. Speaking of flowers, Imelda Staunton’s latest win means she could probably open her own florist’s! The celebrated actor took home her fifth Olivier Award for her iconic performance in Hello, Dolly!, and just when you think she might take a break and put her feet up, she’s already lined up to return to the West End in Mrs Warren’s Profession next month - opposite her real-life daughter, Bessie Carter.  Family dramas were prominent in this year's ceremony too, with Lesley Manville winning her second Olivier Award for her performance as Odeipus’s wife (and mum), Jocasta. It was a hotly contested field, which also saw Indira Varma nominated for the same role (or be it a different production).   Unconventional families seemed to be the theme of this year's Oliviers, with The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, a musical based on the story of a man aging in reverse, snagging three awards, including Best New Musical and Best Actor in a Musical for John Dagleish. Meanwhile, Giant gave us John Lithgow as Roald Dahl, and now it’s given him his first Olivier Award. Romola Garai, who starred opposite Lithgow in the acclaimed production, also picked up her first win - but she had to beat herself to get it! Garai was twice nominated in the Best Supporting Role category for her performances in Giant and The Years, ultimately winning for the latter.  And let’s not forget Fiddler on the Roof, a production that proved tradition isn’t just for the shtetl. It bagged three awards, including Best Musical Revival showing that even if your show’s over 50 years old, you can still make waves with a modern audience.  So, what did we learn? Theatre is thriving. Legends are still slaying. Newcomers are getting their moment. And sometimes, the only person who can defeat Romola Garai... is Romola Garai.

A star on stage and screen, she also is known for her television role as Irene Adler in Sherlock opposite Benedict Cumberbatch and Andrew Scott.

More recently, the 2025 revival at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre received 13 Olivier Award nominations, tying the record set by Hamilton in 2018. The production transfers to the Barbican from 24 May 2025, promising to introduce a fresh interpretation of this timeless classic to new audiences. The Characters of Fiddler on the Roof The ensemble of Fiddler on the Roof brings to life a tapestry of individuals, each contributing to the depth and resonance of the story. Here's an introduction to the principal characters: Tevye Tevye, the central character, is a poor milkman who strives to uphold his Jewish religious and cultural traditions amidst the evolving world around him. His internal conflicts and humorous monologues endear him to audiences as he navigates the challenges posed by his daughters' choices and external societal pressures. Notably, Zero Mostel originated the role on Broadway, earning a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical in 1965. Golde Golde is Tevye's strong-willed and pragmatic wife. She manages the household and supports Tevye, often serving as a grounding force. Maria Karnilova portrayed Golde in the original Broadway production, securing a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical in 1965. Tzeitel Tzeitel is the eldest daughter of Tevye and Golde. She challenges tradition by choosing to marry Motel, her childhood friend, instead of the wealthy butcher Lazar Wolf, whom her parents prefer. This decision sets the stage for the central theme of balancing tradition with personal happiness. Hodel Hodel, the second daughter, falls in love with Perchik, a radical thinker and tutor. Her choice to follow Perchik to Siberia after his arrest underscores her commitment to love and progressive ideals, further highlighting the tension between tradition and change.

London's theatre scene is abuzz as the Olivier Awards 2025 approach, set to dazzle audiences at the Royal Albert Hall on Sunday, 6 April. This annual celebration honours the crème de la crème of London's theatre, promising an evening filled with glamour, emotion, and, undoubtedly, a few surprises. A Dynamic Duo Takes Centre Stage This year, the ceremony will be hosted by two luminaries of the stage: Beverley Knight and Billy Porter. Knight, Britain's Queen of Soul, boasts a remarkable career spanning nine studio albums and numerous accolades. Theatre enthusiasts will recognize her from standout performances in Memphis The Musical, The Drifters Girl, and her Olivier Award-winning role as Emmeline Pankhurst in Sylvia. Porter, an American powerhouse, is just an Oscar shy of the coveted EGOT status. Renowned for his Emmy-winning portrayal of Pray Tell in Pose and his Tony-winning performance as Lola in Kinky Boots, Porter is currently captivating West End audiences in Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club. A Night of Stellar Performances The event will feature performances from Best New Musical and Best Musical Revival nominees, which includes; The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, MJ the Musical, Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812, Why Am I So Single?, Oliver! and Starlight Express. While the full lineup remains under wraps, attendees can anticipate electrifying performances from some of the year's most acclaimed productions. Adam Dannheisser called it an incredible opportunity to return to the "proud, brave world of Anatevka." Lara Pulver described the show as "thought-provoking, entertaining, and infinitely hummable" (and let’s be honest, you’re already humming "If I Were a Rich Man”, aren’t you?). Beverley Klein, meanwhile, is especially thrilled to be back at the Barbican after 40 years, reminiscing about her Les Misérables days and looking forward to matchmaking once more.

The Oscars may have dazzled Hollywood last Sunday, but let’s be honest—those golden statues were just the warm-up for the acting awards that matter. And by the awards, we mean the Oliviers, obviously. It’s fitting that, on this Pancake Day, the theatre world has served up a stacked list of nominations. There’s drama, there’s competition, and, in a uniquely theatrical twist, two actresses are nominated for playing the same role, in separate productions, of the same show at different theatres. You won’t find that level of delicious chaos at the Dolby Theatre. Fresh from winning his second Oscar on Sunday for The Brutalist, Adrien Brody now finds himself in the running for Best Actor for his performance in The Fear of 13 at the Donmar Warehouse. If he wins, it’ll be a rare feat—taking home both an Oscar and an Olivier in the same year is the kind of acting flex only a select few have achieved. But his category is fiercely competitive, and if there’s one thing the Olivier nominations have proved, it’s that London theatre is brimming with powerhouses. Just ask Lesley Manville and Indira Varma, both up for Best Actress for playing the exact same character—Jocasta in Oedipus. Manville’s production ran at Wyndham’s Theatre in the autumn, while Varma is currently delivering her version at The Old Vic, and though they never shared a stage, their performances were so distinct that both have secured their own spots on the shortlist. Romola Garai, meanwhile, decided that one nomination wasn’t enough and has landed two in the Best Actress in a Supporting Role category—one for The Years and the other for Giant. As does Howard Hudson who receives dual Best Lighting Design nominations for Natasha, Pierre and Starlight Express. The real star of the nomination list is Fiddler on the Roof, which has waltzed ahead of the competition with 13 nominations, making it the most celebrated production of the year. Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre's revival of the beloved musical has been widely praised for its fresh, intimate approach to Tevye’s story, and its sweep across multiple categories—Best Musical Revival, Best Actor, Best Director, and a host of design nods— which makes us even more excited for the West End transfer at the Barbican later this year! It's music to our ears! Following a critically acclaimed run at the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, Fiddler on the Roof will be transferring to the Barbican this summer.  Directed by Jordan Fein (the Tony and Olivier Award-winning director behind the celebrated 2023 revival of Oklahoma!), and featuring choreography by Julia Cheng and design by Tom Scutt, the production was nominated for five WhatsOnStage Awards last year, and received more 5-star reviews than a richman has gold coins. In one such review, The Telegraph hailed the revival a “spine-tingling production,” claiming that it was “a masterclass in balancing innovation with tradition.” The Evening Standard agreed, declaring it “hugely moving.”

If I Were a Rich Man Tired and fed up, Tevye asks God what harm would come from him being wealthy. Listing off the simple pleasures and easier life he’d live and enjoy if he had the money, the most famous of the Fiddler on the Roof songs highlights the humble lifestyle he and other villagers have. Sabbath Prayer After Tevye rejects Lazar Wolf, Tzeitel implores the young and handsome Motel to ask for her hand in marriage. The family gathers for the Sabbath, and Motel misses his chance. To Life Lazar and Tevye meet for a drink, and after a misunderstanding, Lazar convinces the father to allow him to marry Tzeitel. Overcome with joy, they drink to life, and the rest of the village gets involved, toasting to good fortune. Miracle of Miracles The morning after the revelry, Tevye announces his agreement with Lazar Wolf. Though Golde is overjoyed, Tzeitel is devastated and asks Tevye to grant her marriage to Motel. The timid tailor pleads to the father, and Tevye allows the union. The young couple celebrate with Miracle of Miracles. Tevye’s Dream To pave over his mistakes, Tevye pretends to be waking from a nightmare while Golde interrogates the identity of their eldest daughter's husband-to-be.  Sunrise, Sunset Everyone comes together for Tzeitel and Motel’s wedding, and the parents sing a melancholy song about the passage of time.
