About The King and I at the Cliffs Pavilion

Rodgers and Hammerstein originally wrote King and I for Broadway in 1951, after opening at the St James Theatre to rave reviews, the London production opened at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in October 1953 and ran for an astonishing 946 performances.

In this story of East meets West, the widowed British schoolteacher Anna is hired by the King of Siam in his attempts to modernise his country. Although connected to the students, Anna struggles with not only cultural difference, but a tricky relationship with the headstrong king. Through her persistence and willingness for human connection, Anna helps to fuel a sense of openness and social understanding between her and the king in an attempt to invoke change and understanding. A tale beyond its years, The King and I teaches us that love can transcend the greatest of differences.

Really good strong performance by the cast .Seats overpriced. Disappointed to not seeing Helen George and no announcement to say .Just a typed piece of payment pinned to a poster . Not good enough really .People around us had come a very long way to see her . The understudy was superb and a great evening .

Great performance although hugely disappointed that Helen George didn’t appear as this was the main reason we booked! Maria Coyne did a fantastic job as Anna but I understand that Helen hadn’t appeared on Thursday so the cynic in me feels as though her name was used to sell the show. The poster said 18th-22nd April so diesnt seem to big a commitment to fulfill. There was also an unfortunate incident where an audience member fell ill and the show had to be stopped. The cast did well to pick up where they left off and hopefully the audience member has made a full recovery.

Helen George was not in it. Her stand-in was excellent. Re Helen's non-appearance, there were a few type written A4 sheets not actually mentioning her but only naming the part she plays (totally unfamiliar with that name) and naming her stand-in. There was no other mention, no apology, no reason, nothing. We paid £70 per ticket so we paid West End prices for what was a disappointment, in the end, in a non-West End Theatre. We also noted that buying tickets locally would have cost us a good deal less. We feel some sort of recompense is due.
