Dreamgirls announces it will be finishing its West End run
Updated on 10 April 2020
The London production of the 1981 Broadway musical, Dreamgirls, has just announced that it will be wrapping up its run in January 2019.
Dreamgirls premiered for the first time in London's West End back in 2016 at the Savoy Theatre. The final performance is scheduled for 12 January 2019.
The hit musical was directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw (The Book of Mormon, Mean Girls, Aladdin) and is based on the real-life '60s girl group, The Supremes. The story follows Lorrell, Effie and Deena as they form a girl group called the Dreamettes and eventually catapult into stardom. Of course, their road to fame isn't just a walk in the park and they face many obstacles on the way.
The original UK premiere starred American actress and singer Amber Riley (Glee, Hair) as Effie White, Ibinabo Jack (Legally Blonde musical) as Lorrell and Liisi Lafontaine as Deena. Currently starring in the West End production are Asmeret Ghebremichael (Legally Blonde, The Book of Mormon, Wicked), Moya Angela (America's Got Talent), Marisha Wallace (Aladdin), and Brennyn Lark (The Prince of Egypt).
Dreamgirls has won six Tony Awards and two Grammy Awards. In 2017, the original star of the Savoy Theatre production, Amber Riley, won both a WhatsOnStage Award and an Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical.
It took 35 years for Dreamgirls to finally run in the West End and after three highly successful seasons, it comes with great regret to see the show make its stage exit. If you have not yet seen the Dreamettes trio rock the house, then now is your last chance to catch them before the show's final curtain call in January.
