In a complete change of image from her star making role as the lead of hit US comedy series Ugly Betty, America Ferrera is now showing another side. Making her long dreamed for West End debut she said, "Roxy definitely brings out the crazy sex kitten in everyone." She told the Evening Standard, "It’s fun to get to live in that place and be driven by gut and emotions and desire and whatever she wants at the moment".
Preparation for the role has been tough with Ferrera describing it as being like boot camp. She says, "I would say there’s a part that aches every day, a different part every day. Taking on the role, which is her first major musical role is an ambition that she says is the biggest thing she has ever wanted to do in London. "There is such a history of theatre and plays and playwrights in London and it’s the motherland for actresses if you like, it’s where our history began in theatre."
Her co-star Darius Campbell will be able to give her plenty of hints as he has previously played the role of Billy Flynn back in 2006 to much acclaim. Describing his character he said, "He's the consummate businessman and a wonderful guy". He has revealed he's based his portrayal of scheming lawyer Billy Flynn on his old mentor, Simon Cowell in terms of the way he approaches things and "I recognise that in terms of the character."
Sure to be one of the hottest tickets in town, the show is currently on sale until January 2013, with America Ferrera scheduled to take on Roxy Hart with the cast for eight weeks before leaving to star in the revival of the 1984 play The Missfirecracker Contest on Broadway.
