Posted on 8 December 2011
Currently a hit on the other side of the pond in US dark comedy tv show Nurse Jackie, Eve Best is back treading the boards next year at The Old Vic Theatre in the John Webster play The Duchess of Malfi. The production previews from 17th March with Press Night on 28th March and will run until 8th June.
After graduating from RADA, Eve Best made her debut at the Young Vic opposite Jude Law in 'Tis Pity She's a Whore in 1999. An Olivier Award winner for playing the title role in Hedda Gabler, Best is no stranger to the Old Vic having performed in Eugene O'Neill's play A Moon For The Misbegotten for which she received another Olivier Award nomination and took to Broadway playing opposite Kevin Spacey receiving a Tony Award nomination.
Kevin Spacey, now the Artistic Director of The Old Vic said: “It will be thrilling to see Eve Best on The Old Vic stage again in this momentous classic role. Jamie Lloyd is certain to bring a contemporary perspective to this great play and create a memorable Old Vic event. I have long admired Jamie’s work and am delighted to welcome him to The Old Vic for the first time.”
John Webster was a contemporary of William Shakespeare known for his Jacobean tradegies which are regarded as masterpieces of the early 17th century stage. The Duchess (Giovanna d'Aragona) is recently widowed but falls in love with Antonio, a lowly steward, but her brothers, not wishing her to share their inheritance, forbid her from remarrying. She marries Antonio in secret and bears him several children leading to a nightmarish tragedy as her two brothers exact their revenge, destroying themselves in the process.
