IN HEAVEN WITH DON GIOVANNI THE OPERA!
Posted on 12 April 2012
Mozart's most famous opera, Don Giovanni gets a revamp unlike any other at the famous London nightclub, Heaven . There are only 6 performances either on a Sunday or Monday starting 15th April until 30th April. Starring in Don Giovanni The Opera is Duncan Rock.
Don Giovanni is a comic tragedy by Mozart about an arrogant, licentious nobleman who offends everyone he meets. In this version Don Giovanni is a playboy who leaps out of the closet as a debaucherous nightclub owner and straight into the heady heyday of the Eighties club scene. With the Don's pursuit and conquest of young men as well as the ladies, there is a complete reversal of roles.
Duncan Rock is an Australian baritone opera singer who made his mark on the international operatic stage as the 2010 Jerwood Young Artist for Glyndebourne Festival Opera. In concert Duncan has performed at the Royal Albert Hall, National Theatre, Barbican Centre, LSO St Luke’s and the Wigmore Hall. Future engagements include appearances with English National Opera, Scottish Opera, Opera North and Welsh National Opera. His operatic roles have included: Marcello and Schaunard La Boheme, Papageno The Magic Flute, Count Almaviva Le Nozze di Figaro, Tarquinius The Rape of Lucretia, Guglielmo Cosi fan tutte and the title roles in Don Giovanni and Le Nozze di Figaro.
The production supports Sir Elton John’s Aids Foundation, but it has been stressed that it is not a show about AIDS, but is relevant in the context of the time the production is set in around 1987 and the attitude of people at the time.
The original Italien text has been translated to English and many of the singing roles are reversed. Described as a thoughtful, fresh interpretation that will be entertaining and exhilarating for those who are opera fans or new to the experience.
