Sleeping Beauty will premiere at the end of 2012 and will be the final of the three Tchaikovsky ballets that Bourne has reinvented in his own unique style. The news came last week as Sadler's Wells announced that Bourne's version of Cinderella last year was his most successful show at Sadler's Wells to date making £3 million in ticket sales and being seen by 94,000 people over 64 performances.
Bourne commented that Sleeping Beauty will open in the year 1890 and will conclude in the present day after Aurora's century long sleep. The performance will mark the end of the year long celebrations to mark Bourne's company's 25th anniversary celebrations. Kicking off the celebrations will be Nutcracker! starting at the end of this year.
Artistic Director of Sadler's Wells, Alistair Spalding said “I am delighted that we will be recognising Matthew Bourne’s incredible contribution and achievements at Sadler’s Wells next year. No other artist has succeeded in bringing so many new audiences to the form. For the past decade the success of Sadler’s Wells and New Adventures have gone hand in hand.”
