The Pillowman plot in a nutshell
The play tells the tale of fiction writer Katurian who is interrogated by police after a series of child murders resembles the author's own short stories. When his brother Michal confesses to the crimes and throws Katurian under the bus, Katurian does everything in his power to protect his works of art before his impending execution. But just how disturbing is Katurian's own imagination? Told from both a narrative and reenactment point of view, The Pillowman is a unique psychological thriller and dark comedy that will have you on the edge of your seat!
About Martin McDonagh and his work
Martin McDonagh's prior works include the Academy Award-winning film Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and The Aran Islands trilogy that includes The Cripple of Inishmaan, a piece that earned Daniel Radcliffe the award for Best Actor in a Play at the WhatsOnStage Awards.
Writer McDonagh commented on the new production "The Pillowman is a play that's always been very close to my heart, in terms of its combination of the darkest of dark comedy with its exploration of the nature of story-telling itself. It's a play that I haven't wanted to have staged in London until I could find the perfect director and the ideal cast for it, and having worked with Matthew previously on Hangmen, and been an admirer of Steve and Aaron's work for many years, I feel it's the perfect time to find out what a whole new generation makes of this peculiar tale."
