Pictured: The Dreamettes strut their stuff in the West End production of Dreamgirls
The critically acclaimed musical, which was directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw (Aladdin, The Book of Mormon, Mean Girls), is partly based on 60's girl group The Supremes. The story follows Lorrell, Effie and Deena from Chicago as they band together to form the Dreamettes. But their road to stardom proves to be a bumpy ride as they frequently encounter the dark side of fame and run into many problems behind the scenes. Can the trio pull through and conquer the various pitfalls that plague the recording industry?
Dreamgirls has proven to be one of the most brilliant and successful musicals in theatrical history, having won six Tony Awards and two Grammy Awards. In 2017, the original star of the Savoy Theatre production, Amber Riley, won both a WhatsOnStage Award and an Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her spectacular performance.
It took 35 years for Dreamgirls to finally hit London's West End and after three highly successful seasons, the show recently announced that it will be closing next year. If you have not yet seen the Dreamettes bring down the house, now is your last chance to catch them before the show's final curtain call on 12 January 2019.
