About The Mask of Orpheus opera

Having premiered back in 1986 at the English National Opera, Harrison Birtwistle’s The Mask of Orpheus received overwhelming critical acclaim, and now it returns for the first time since then to once again tell the Orpheus myth in which the opera represents just part one of four. The opera follows a non-linear narrative, as the leading characters appear in three distinct guises.

ENO Artistic Consultant Daniel Kramer will be collaborating with conductor and ENO Music Director Martyn Brabbins, following their joint works on War Requiem and recently Jack the Ripper: The Women of Whitechapel. Brabbins rises to the massive orchestral forces that The Mask of Orpheus has been scored for, which builds into a three-dimensional picture. The score takes us from inconsolable grief to acceptance and transformation.

The cast and creatives of The Mask Orpheus

The cast includes many regular ENO artists, recognised for their expertise in contemporary music: Peter Hoare (Goro in Madama Butterfly), Daniel Norman (Monostatos in The Magic Flute), James Cleverton (The Photographer in Jack the Ripper: The Women of Whitechapel) and Robert Hayward (Commissioner of Police in Jack the Ripper: The Women of Whitechapel).

Costume designs come from acclaimed designer Daniel Lismore whilst set designs come from Lizzie Clachan, whose previous works include her acclaimed designs for the National Theatre, notably for Treasure Island. The creative team is completed with lighting and video design from Olivier Award-winning lighting designer Peter Mumford.
