Queen Anne is now showing at the Theatre Royal Haymarket until 30 September!
Following a critically acclaimed, sold-out season at the Swan Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon, the Royal Shakespeare Company production of Queen Anne transfers to the Theatre Royal Haymarket from 30 June.
Emma Cunniffe (The Crucible, Great Expectations) returns as Queen Anne and is joined by Romola Garai (Suffragette, The Hour) as Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough in Helen Edmundson's (The Heresy of Love) gripping play that explores the life of one of England's little known sovereigns who is torn between friendship and duty. They will be joined by Jonathan Christie, Michael Fenton-Stevens, James Garnon, Richard Hope, Hywel Morgan, Beth Park and Carl Prekopp with further casting to be announced soon. Queen Anne will be directed by Natalie Abrahami (Happy Days, Young Vic).
1702. William III is on the throne and England is on the verge of war.
Princess Anne is soon to become Queen, and her advisors vie for influence over the future monarch. Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough, a close friend with whom Anne has an intensely personal relationship, begins to exert increasing pressure as she pursues her own designs on power.
Contending with deceit and blackmail, Anne must decide where her allegiances lie, and whether to sacrifice her closest relationships for the sake of the country.

Absolutely fantastic. Great performance, great show!
Wonderful actors, and powerful.
Really enjoyed play. Great way to update my knowledge of this period of history.
Excellent seats in the stalls for a very reasonable price
Marvellously dramatised version of the Queen, and the Tory Whig machinations. Outstanding presentation of Sarah Marlborough. Nice satirical interludes. Perhaps the superb efforts of Churchill on the continent were underplayed. Some pre-reading recommended for those less steeped in the historical backgound.
Queen Anne was a wonderful portrayal of her life. I especially IIked the presentation , a worthwhile way to spend the evening
An interesting story, well told, acted and presented. A fascinating study of female friendship, of pride and of power - with some relevance to contemporary events. A very professional production, we could hear what the actors were saying! Our only quibble - why was King William played by a black man? We know that William was an outsider to this country, but he's always described as tall, cold and aloof. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed the performance.
Superbly acted, mostly true tale of Queen Anne and her favourites. Really enjoyed this.
Play too long & too full of exposition, though its an interesting period of history which made that less annoying. Acting good, especially the two female leads. Terrible feedback noise intermittently from the speakers. A so so evening in a beautiful theatre.
Brilliant superb acting great story
Outstanding show, impecable acting, enticing plot. I was delighet and very pleased to have caught this show during my visit to London. A must see.
Good production values. Interesting play. We were there the night one of the leads had an accident. Understudy did good job and cast coped really well.

An Interview with Emma Cunniffe and Romola Garai
Following a sold out run at the Swan Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon, Helen Edmundson's fascinating play about one of Britain's lesser known rulers transferred to the Theatre Royal Haymarket this June. Emma Cunniffe (Great Expectations, The Crucible), is the titular Queen Anne, a monarch torn between her duty and the plans of her persuasive and manipulative best friend Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough, played by Romola Garai (Atonement, The Hour). We grabbed five minutes with the ladies to talk about the production.

REVIEW: Queen Anne (in exactly 250 words)
Queen Anne is a gripping, beautifully written piece of theatre – a standard, brilliant RSC historical drama. Whilst the play is fairly complex (you have to concentrate to pick up on all the sinews of the story), there is a good amount of satire injected into the performance, so you don't get bogged down. Add a few well-placed, lively songs, and you're left with a production that is tense and full of depth, but also continuously engaging.
