The Red Lion at the Trafalgar Studios, Studio 2 now on sale!
Three generations explore contrasting ideas about loyalty, ambition and what it takes to win in this powerful locker room drama from multi award winning writer Patrick Marber. A promising young football player arrives at a struggling non-league club and pits the veteran kit man against the ambitious manager who’ll do anything to keep the club and himself afloat.
Directed by Max Roberts, this new version of The Red Lion transfers to London following a sell out run at Live Theatre and stars Stephen Tompkinson (DCI Banks, Drop the Dead Donkey), John Bowler (DCI Banks, The Bill) and Dean Bone (Vera).
In a play that resonates in contemporary British society, The Red Lion goes far beyond the pitch to look at hope, obsessions and the desperation of humanity to be a part of something.
Patrick Marber’s plays have won Evening Standard, Olivier, Time Out, New York and London Critics’ Circle and Writers’ Guild Awards.
★★★★ 'Football does not feel like a metaphor for life in director Max Roberts' intense and heartfelt production …. It’s a passionate staging with an accomplished cast.' -- The Stage

Utterly fantastic acting from the cast and a great story. As a regular theatre it's one of the best shows I've seen this year.
Wonderfully set and props, exceptional acting, great venue and vibe ??????
An enjoyable evening. Possibly written before all the revelations that I think everyone is aware of (bungs and drugs) so nothing to shock you .. but plenty to amuse.
While I am sure that this production, by Trish Wadley, of the Red Lion could have drawn a lot more people it was a privilege to see Stephen Tompkinson (DCI Banks and Brassed Off) playing the manager on the make. No intermission it is a rip roaring 90 minutes which makes you laugh and makes you sad. Raw human emotions - well mens' anyway! See it!
I saw this last night. This was a very good piece of writing beautifully acted by an outstanding cast. The performance deserved the standing ovation. The small theatre enhanced our enjoyment of the piece. This was what good theatre is all about. John Haines jwhaines@btconnect.com
Absolutely brilliant! Can't recommend highly enough. Great story, acting and venue.
Excellently written play brought to brilliant life by the highly talented cast. We didn’t want it to end!
Great production, very believable cast, dark humour interspersed with reality. Enjoyed it very much.

The Red Lion
The setting of The Red Lion, the changing room of a non-league football club, recalls the 70's Play for Today. At first glance, it seems too parochial for the West End with too esoteric a backdrop. Even the intimate confines of Trafalgar Studios’ smallest space has the whiff of fringe (along with body odour and wet grass). But Patrick Marber’s chamber piece, late of the National Theatre, revived here leaner, retooled and relocated to a North Eastern setting, proves the maxim that any story can be interesting if told with passion and an ear for what we sometimes call real lives.
