King Hedley II tickets are now available for August Wilson’s King Hedley II featuring  Lenny Henry at the Theatre Royal Stratford East.

Known as one of August Wilson’s darkest plays and the 9th in his 10 part cycle on the conditions of African Americans living in the United States during the 20th century, King Hedley II makes its way to London’s Theatre Royal Stratford East.

In the 1980s Pittsburg was a city in shambles. In Reagan’s America the economy is not looking good. King is an ex-con looking to start his life over again and start a family of his own.

King is a man with a plan. He’s going to open a video store and build a new life for himself. All he needs to do is pull together ten thousand dollars and he can set out on his new path. In his barren backyard King and his friend, Mister, try to work out a plan, but can his dream become a reality?

Beloved comedian and actor Lenny Henry features in King Hedley II as silver-tongued hustler Elmore. August Wilson’s moving play is real, angry, and touching-a journey for one man, and a whole community to find redemption.

Great acting and direction. A bit too long and the lighting, while dramatic, was a bit harsh on the eye from the audience.

Beautifully set, lit, cast.......but it needed ferocious cutting. The first half of an hour and three quarters was completely unacceptable and it wore us out, we didn't go back; we stayed in the bar and had a lovely time.It had seemed so static, we didn't care about any of the characters, except the singer, rather a fascinating creature. A great big E for Effort to the cast, they worked their arses off up there, but they, alas, couldn't win us over. Sorry.

Amazing such a powerful message! The actors were all out-standing loved Lenny

I thoroughly enjoyed the performance of King Hedley II and thought the acting of the entire cast was excellent. The story line was complex but compelling and the set was great. I would have given 5 stars if there was had not been a slight obstruction to my view as I sat in row K1 and to my right there was a pillar that was blocking a full appreciation of the stage and performance.

Elizabeth

It was great that the show was accessible to the people in the local community and not just the privileged. Great cast and gripping to watch.

So relevant to the issues of today with some fantastic actors and star power with national treasure Lenny Henry. Play 8 in a 10 play cycle - I'm going to have to buy all the plays and read them.

Sandra Weekes

Good story, good acting but too long.

Mr Stephen J Caton

The performances were powerful by every cast member - a must see production.

Nayagen Palanyandi

The production was too long. There was no substance in the story line as we felt that it did not flow. The acting from Hedley and the older gentleman was exceptional.

Sharon Comery

The first half was quite long before the intermission but generally engaging, emotional and shocking. Would recommend this play. Well done guys x
