The premise for Duncan Macmillan's Lungs play

Sea levels are rising while ice caps are melting. There is political unrest abroad and at home. Nothing is certain and nothing is stable. Why in the world would anyone want to bring a child into this world? This clever, cutting and funny drama trails a couple (Claire Foy, Matt Smith) through their relationship as they struggle with issues of family, uncertainty, change, hope, betrayal and coincidence. There is no pain like the pain caused by those we love.

"I could fly to New York and back every day for seven years and still not leave a carbon footprint as big as if I have a child. Ten thousand tonnes of CO2. That’s the weight of the Eiffel Tower. I’d be giving birth to the Eiffel Tower."

Duncan Macmillan tackles issues that arise in real relationships in Lungs, which comes to the West End as part of the Old Vic Season 5.

Claire Foy and Matt Smith in Lungs at the Old Vic Theatre

Claire Foy and Matt Smith have risen to international fame in no small part due to the incredible success of the Netflix series, The Crown. Now the two reunite on the West End stage to play a very different couple with very different issues.

Claire Foy is a SAG, Primetime Emmy and Golden Globe award-winning actress. She made her professional stage debut at the Royal National  Theatre and in 2013 starred alongside James McAvoy in the Trafalgar Studios production of Macbeth. Foy began to earn international acclaim for her portrayal of the young Queen Elizabeth II in the first two series of Netflix's drama The Crown. She is also known for television roles in Little Dorrit and her widely lauded performance in the six-part series Wolf Hall. Her recent film appearances include UnsaneThe Girl in the Spider's Web, and the critically acclaimed biopic First Man.

Matt Smith is widely known as the 11th Doctor after replacing David Tennant in the classic British television series Doctor Who.  His role on the show would make him the first Doctor to be nominated for a BAFTA. Smith has worked alongside his Lungs co-star Claire Foy as Prince Phillip in The Crown which earned him Emmy and SAG award nominations. He is no stranger to the stage having joined the National Youth Theatre when he was in school. He went on to perform in numerous Royal National Theatre productions. Smith, along with the entire cast of That Face, were awarded an Olivier for Outstanding Achievement in an Affiliate Theatre for the Royal Court Theatre Upstairs production. When he reprised the role in its West End transfer to the Duke of York's Theatre it was met with critical acclaim.
