This new play by award-winning writer Sabrina Mahfouz (ChefNoughts & Crosses) has come to The Royal Court's Jerwood Theatre Upstairs. A History of Water in the Middle East tickets are only available for a limited 5-week run, so you'll want to act quickly. Don't miss this insightful look into history and the future, power and resources.

What is A History of Water in the Middle East about?

When Sabrina Mahfouz was growing up she wanted to be a spy. As a British Egyptian with two passports who speaks two languages and has a deep cultural understand of two countries that are very different she seemed like a perfect candidate. However, when it came time to apply for MI6, it turned out she wasn’t British enough.

Now she’s taken on a mission of her own. Using theatre, poetry and music she shares stories of women from across the continent to explore who really has the power in and over the Middle East. We’ve long known the world is obsessed by access to oil, but is water going to become the natural resource that dictates control, or has it always been?

A History of Water in the Middle East explores ideas of British Imperial ownership of natural resources, the environmental urgency of our current times, the way that water has moulded lives, politics and fortunes and the way it will continue to shape our future.

Powerful and passionate

Nura Al-Shibli

Talented group with a creative, artistic, humanistic approach to drawing attention to a serious issue in the Middle East. Some inaccurate data, but the performer did warn & mention this prior to the performance. Casual, friendly venue.

Shinya Sugiyama

Ingenious way of making a complex and important issue accessible without being patronising.
