Tickets for The Taming of the Shrew are available now!

It’s carnival season this summer as Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew arrives at the Globe Theatre in full force! A vivacious and colourful comedy, don’t miss this spectacular adaption of a much-loved classic.

What is The Taming of the Shrew about?

Young lover, Lucentio is determined to win the beautiful Bianca’s hand in marriage, however when Bianca’s father declares that it will only happen once her older sister Katherina is wedded, his chances seem slim. The competition to mould the fiercely independent Katherina into an obedient wife begins with the larger-than-life Pertruchio who takes on this equally sizable challenge.

Plese bear in mind

The play contains sexual references and misogynistic themes and language.

Facts and critical acclaim

  • It may be his debued at The Globe, but director Jude Christian is no stranger to Shakespeare! 2022s production of Titus Andronicus at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse recieved critical acclaim and was hailed as ‘brilliantly provocative’ by The Gaurdian.
  • Since it was first performed in 1633, the risqué rom com has been adapted hundreds of times! Most notably in the form of the multi award-winning musical and film, Kiss me, Kate
  • Characters in Taming of the Shrew also appear in other Shakespeare plays. With Percutio, one of the leads in Shew, featuring in Romeo and Juliet.

It was very difficult to hear the actors, even though I was in the middle section just above the ground level. So I missed most of the dialogue. Very frustrating!!!

Rory Hammerson

This is a complex play. The use of puppets is interesting but the whole ensemble is confusing, bizarre and uncomfortable. The acting is great. Thalissa is amazing as Katherine, but the stage and the props add to a frenetic and slightly unhinged production

Mary Wells

I would have preferred a much more traditional production. A lot of the aids just distracted from the skill of the actors and the scenery seemed irrelevant.

Christopher Mirecki

Poorly envisioned and implemented.

Robert

Childish and amateur. I do not know who is the target audience for this production; certainly neither a Shakespeare aficionado nor a young chiild since this production will bore both extremes.

clare

excellent performances, especially Petruchia and Trania

Alison K

A right romping giggle from start to finish, played in great spirit. A really interesting switch of male/ female roles, quite apposite for today.

Justine Marlowe

2nd RSC show we have been to. We saw Merry Wives of Windsor last year. Really enjoyed it. Thought provoking, fun and entertaining.

Anne e wood

great production made relevant for today

Mr Lockie

funny, fun, good acting and production. Quieter actors needed mikes.Difficult to comprehend

Mrs Gemma Ackref

Some great performances amongst some weaker one. The gender swap didn’t quite hit the spot with a very weak Kate but the Barbican and it’s facilities really did impress.

Alan Newland

An entraining show, with fabulous costumes and some terrific performances but (directorially) not up to the usual standards of the RSC, in my view.
