What is the Beryl Burton play about?

The play tells Beryl Burton's heartwarming and unforgettable story. Regarded as the greatest woman to ever ride on two wheels, Beryl Burton is someone to be remembered. At age 11, she was diagnosed with a heart-weakening illness. Her doctors told her to avoid strenuous activity for as long as she shall live, but Beryl defied all warnings. At age 30, with no financial sponsorship and bearing the moniker, 'the Yorkshire housewife', she became the first sportswoman in history to beat a man's competitive sports record. Throughout her cycling career, Beryl won a total of seven world titles and over 90 domestic championship titles whilst also setting countless national sports records. Her women's record for the 12-hour time trial with a total of 277.25 miles went undefeated by any man for two whole years.

Beryl: A Love Story On Two Wheels was originally broadcast as a radio play with Maxine Peake in the role of Beryl Burton. It also included interview snippets with Beryl's husband, Charlie, and their daughter, Denise Burton Cole, who ent on to become a cycling champion herself. The radio play was eventually adapted for the stage by Peake for the Tour de France in Leeds and premiered at the West Yorkshire Playhouse in June and July 2014 with the newly abridged title, Beryl. Following the show's success, it returned to the West Yorkshire Playhouse the following year before embarking on a nationwide tour in 2015. The play is now set to make its way to the Arcola Theatre in Hackney, London.

Very imaginative energetic play and instilled much empathy for Beryl the main character. It had a positive feel good factor in a time of doom and gloom.

Ms Sonia Richardson

Very enjoyable, well- staged so that the space became part of the performance, and beautifully acted. Very poignant at the end. I had heard Maxine Peake’s play on Radio 4 and enjoyed it very much, and really enjoyed this staged version. Only downside: no coffee in your cafe!

Andrew Goll

Venue was lovely and intimate Performance was brilliant Bar staff slow, lethargic and very miserable. They need a kick up the a***!

The play was great, but if you check your records you will see that the ticket that i purchased was not collected. This is because a friend had bought me a ticket. It is a shame that I could not get a refund. Not value for money as i paid twice!
