Peter Nichols' black comedy returns to London
Bri and his wife Sheila have a 10-year-old daughter who was born with cerebral palsy. She is paralysed and unable to communicate and the demands of caring for her round the clock are putting an unimaginable amount of pressure on the couple’s marriage. The couple, but Bri especially seek to deal with the difficulties of their day to day life with a series of comic routines that mock the interactions they have had with doctors, vicars and others around them.
Sheila seems to be finding an outlet through her amateur dramatics but Bri is becoming increasingly frustrated and paranoid. It soon becomes clear that this dark humour isn’t going to solve their problems and the family are confronted by the harsh realities of their lives and are forced to make some decisions.
Unfortunately, it was announced that Peter Nichols passed away on 7 September 2019. His death was only two weeks ahead of the show's opening and Joe Egg will now be presented posthumously for the first time.
Toby Stephens and Claire Skinner to star in A Day in the Death of Joe Egg
Toby Stephens is set to star as weary school teacher and father of ‘Joe Egg,’ Bri. The actor has continued in the footsteps of his famous parents Dame Maggie Smith and Sir Robert Stephens. He has played leading roles in numerous Royal Shakespeare Company productions. He won multiple Ian Charleson Awards as well as a Sir John Gielgud Award. His Broadway debut in Ring Round the Moon earned him a Theatre World Award. His most recent West End performance was in the 2017 production of Oslo at London’s Harold Pinter Theatre. In addition to his stage work, Stephens is a prolific audiobook narrator and radio drama voice actor. His career has extended to the screen most notable are his award-nominated portrayal of Gustav Graves in the 2002 Bond film Die Another Day, his role as Mr Rochester in a BBC television adaptation of Jane Eyre. He also starred in the television series Black Sails and is currently starring in the Netflix series Lost In Space.
Claire Skinner will be joining Stephens on stage as his wife Sheila. Perhaps best known for her role in the BBC series Outnumbered, Skinner has also had a varied stage career. The Olivier and BAFTA award-nominated actress has worked numerous times with director Alan Ayckbourn. She has appeared in many Shakespeare plays at the Royal National Theatre and for the Royal Shakespeare Company. Her performance in The Glass Menagerie earned her an Olivier nomination. She has most recently appeared in Nightfall at London’s Bridge Theatre.
Storme Toolis is set to join the pair as the titular Joe Egg. The actress has appeared on The Inbetweeners and The Inbetweeners Movie as well as the television series New Tricks. The actress was born with cerebral palsy and is a great advocate for disabled actors playing disabled roles. Her turn as Joe Egg marks the first time in the West End history of A Day in the Death of Joe Egg that this has happened.
The pair will appear alongside Patricia Hodge. The actress is popularly known for her role on hit comedy series Miranda. The actress has distinguished herself on the stage and screen, winning a BAFTA for her role in the film Hotel du Lac and an Olivier Award for her role in Money. The cast is completed by Athena Stevens, Clarence Smith, Harry Attwell, Lucy Eaton, and Rebecca Hands-Wick.
The show will be directed by Simon Evans. Evans returns to Trafalgar Studios after directing the hit Killer Joe starring Orlando Bloom there last year. Olivier Award-winner Peter McKintosh (Crazy for You, Hello, Dolly!, The 39 Steps) does the design for A Day in the Death of Joe Egg, with lighting by Prema Mehta and sound and composition by Ed Lewis.

Profound, thought provoking, deeply moving but somehow entertaining as well —— with no glib answer at the end — so continuing to haunt and disturb.
Excellent acting and a wonderful venue.

London Theatre Review: A Day in the Death of Joe Egg at London's Trafalgar Studios
A Day in the Death of Joe Egg focuses on Bri and Sheila; parents to a disabled daughter they have nicknamed “Joe Egg”. The couple uses wry humour to deal keep the family together, and the limits of this approach, and the strength of their relationship, are tested. The show is undoubtedly an important and illuminating piece of theatre, the play being based on the author’s own struggles with raising his disabled daughter. Storme Toolis as Joe was excellent. I found myself drawn to focusing on her when she was on stage. Her control over the character was masterful and truly brilliant to watch.
