London theatre tickets for Snowflake at the Kiln Theatre on sale now!

Snowflakethe highly-praised holiday hit by the BAFTA Award-nominated and Olivier Award-winning playwright Mike Bartlett (Doctor Foster, Charles III) is set to make its highly-anticipated London premiere at the Off-West End venue The Kiln Theatre. The "warm and funny" (The Times) play is directed by Olivier Award-winner Clare Lizzimore (Bull) and has received a fleet of five-star reviews last year at the Old Fire Station in Oxford with The Guardian calling it "masterfully written" and "rich in insight, poignancy and optimism."

What is Mike Bartlett's Snowflake play about?

"Because Christmas. At least, that's when they say people tend to visit their families at home."

Snowflake by Mike Bartlett is an epic tale about cross-generational clashes between fathers and daughters and whether we can call our era the best of times or the worst of times. Andy, aged 43, admires TV nostalgia and loves to grab more than a pint at the local pub. He has hired a village hall in Oxfordshire for Christmas Eve in the hopes that his daughter Maya, aged 21, would come back home to see him for the holidays. She hasn't spoken to her father since having run away from home three years ago following her mother's tragic death. Bartlett masterfully weaves a story of two sides to an argument while rarely displaying a bias towards one particular side.

My wife and I (in our 60s) thought the contemporary storyline was very thought provoking. The male actor wonderfully portrays his struggle as a white middle aged man trying to understand modern community expectations of his gender and race in relation to the growing diversity of social norms. The two female actors play their parts brilliantly, alternating between demanding the right for their voices to be heard in a society that seems to undervalue their views and seeking to achieve a reconciliation between values of the past and those of the present/future.

The play was very well written & well acted. The set really reflected a church/village hall

I was delighted with this thought proving play. 6 of us watched it aged from 26 to 60. We had an amazing and at times challenging discussion afterwards with each of us resolving to do something different in our own behaviour. Well worth watching

Fantastic script, brilliantly played characters especially the role of Alan. Very touching emotive writing, yet uplifting, funny and human. We were also impressed by the level of professionalism from Sanija from the restruant we had arrived a bit later in advanced with 30 mins to spare before the show. She was very helpful in what we could have within our time frame and was super friendly and attentive. Best service I have had in a while, we would defiantly be coming back.

Very predictable plot. Was exactly what I thought it was going to be in terms of how the political points were portrayed/presented and it was very hard to side or feel empathy towards the two female protagonists/antagonists as they were characterised with such aggression and defensiveness from the outset, that it did feel as if both the father and audience were being bullied into believing his flaws, and in fact "our own". I walked out feeling as if he had been victimised, which I'm sure was not the writers intention, but as I say, the two actresses did not present the characters, in my opinion, in the best light, and they lacked depth from a writing perspective. Both sides of the argument seemed very polarizing and a little one note, which is a shame, because this is exactly what I was expecting, which I suppose in an ironic way, is very reflective of the way in which the country was completely divided by Brexit, and I have given it three stars because it did spark a debate after the show, if we had have walked away and not discussed the play at all, it would have got two.
