Tennessee Williams' Cat On A Hot Tin Roof returning to the West End's Apollo Theatre

The truth hurts.

On a steamy night in Mississippi, a Southern family gather at their cotton plantation to celebrate Big Daddy’s birthday. The scorching heat is almost as oppressive as the lies they tell.  Brick and Maggie dance round the secrets and sexual tensions that threaten to destroy their marriage. With the future of the family at stake, which version of the truth is real – and which will win out?

Sienna Miller stars as Maggie alongside Jack O’Connell as Brick and Colm Meaney as Big Daddy. A return to the stage for director Benedict Andrews following his smash hit production of A Streetcar Named Desire. Tennessee Williams’ searing, poetic story of a family’s fight for survival is a modern masterpiece.

Tennessee Williams’ Pulitzer prize winning play received its world premiere in 1955 at the Morosco Theater on Broadway with Barbara Bel Geddes and Ben Gazzara as Maggie and Brick.  The UK premiere, directed by Peter Hall, opened at the Comedy Theatre in 1958 with Kim Stanley and Paul Massie in the same roles.  The 1958 Academy Award nominated film starring Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman was directed by Richard Brooks.

I liked it a lot. It was a wonderful experience with great cast and interesting story. Just the price was a bit high. Other than that I would definately recommend it.

Absolutely frightful not recommended for anyone

Intense and emotional performance from Sienna Miller. Excellent staging. 2nd half did drag a little but picked up at end

Nicole Churchill

Absolutly fantastic ..... i loved it so much I saw it twice ! With this cast the play could run longer than Mousetrap!!!

The show was truly captivating and every actor and actress played a truly believable character with an abundance of passion. I truly forgot that there was a world outside the theatre that night.

The first act alone was worth the ticket price. The tension and sexual energy between Maggie and Brick envelops the theatre. Sienna Miller is a revelation as Maggie the cat and her almost one woman monologue throughout the first act mesmerising. Jack O' Connell, broody and withdrawn oozes sex appeal and has the magnetism of a young Brando. The accent does slip at times but he holds his own against the excellent Miller. He drinks so much without needing relief (maybe he has a sly pee in the shower!) Great support from Lisa Palfrey as Big Mama and Hayley Squires as the conniving gold-digger Mae. Have seen the Elizabeth Taylor/Paul Newman movie so many times on TV but seeing Williams play on stage and giving it the attention his words deserve enabled me to fully appreciate and realise the conflict between truth and illusion in the play. Truly excellent and well worth seeing.

Great Performance, thoroughly enjoyed it. (shame about the uncomfortable seating in the theatre)

Quality traditional theatre well presented. Very clean good service from staff. Seats quite uncomfortable though. A good production acted with passion. The quality of acting was excellent. I especially acknowledge the passion and proffessionalism of Maggie's husband and big daddy. I would have liked to see the production based on the 1950s film as regards clothing. Not sure of the benefit of modernizing the play using mobile phones etc. nevertheless an excellent production, acted with sincerity and passion. I congratulate the cast for their hard work and commitment. Regards Kevin

Susan Lever

Excellent, brilliant acting

Chris

Outstandingly good. Sienna Miller has a one hour virtually solo performance which is captivating and entertaining. The second act with Colin Meaney is equally powerful but entirely different. An absolute must see.

Gail Paterson

A first rate production, all performances were superb, particularly Sienna Miller in the first act.

West End Journey: Sienna Miller

West End Journey: Sienna Miller

Sienna Miller is currently tantalising audiences at the Apollo Theatre in Benedict Andrews' take on the Tennessee Williams classic Cat On A Hot Tin Roof.   She stars as the frustrated and unfulfilled Maggie trying to rebuild a connection with Jack O'Connell's tormented and most likely repressed Brick.   Much has been made of both stars' nudity during the show, but Miller herself has implored audiences that although Andrews' staging is a bold and eye-catching opening to the production, she hopes to be ultimately judged on her performance.
