An Enemy of the People In London
Doubt spreads more rapidly than any illness in Ibsen's thought-provoking play An Enemy of the People, which explores the concept of truth within a society that hungers for power and wealth.
When Dr. Stockmann makes an astonishing discovery about the dangerous and bacterial properties of the local (and highly popular) tourist baths' water, the fate of the town instantly falls into his hands, but those who have much to lose are unwilling to accept his claims and meet him with resistance and opposition.
Conflict extends beyond contaminated water in this contemporary production by Ostermeier, which aims to break down barriers and remind us why the struggle between social classes is ever-present. About The Show
Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen is the mastermind behind An Enemy of the People. The play made its debut on January 13, 1883, at the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen, Denmark and was an instant hit with audiences. Edvard Grieg crafted the musical score for the production, and amongst its most popular compositions are ‘The Doctor's Dilemma’ and ‘Truth and Lies’.
A favourite character for fans is undoubtedly Dr. Thomas Stockmann. Stockmann shows a ground-breaking commitment to truth and ethics, unlike any other character. With themes of environmental responsibility and moral integrity, the story continues to be a highly influential work within theatre.

Amazing!!!
Unnecessary amount of swearing. Unnecessary updating of references from the original text. Poor speech projection in opening scenes. The “great speech” at the Town Hall meeting was simplistic to the point of banality, even though the essential message is as relevant today as it was in Ibsen’s time. Acting very good. Stage actions (whitewashing, paint balls) very visual, scene changes very well done. The whole play was very polished, energetic and dynamic. Well worth seeing.
I disliked the council meeting. I paid to see the play not to listen to public's opinion. I feel it was enforced onto me.
This play about a town's water pollution crisis was novel at the time but it seems tired now. The set was very well done. But even adding audience participation and a long rambling rant from David Tennant did little freshen it up. Perhaps I'm jaded but London has an actual acute water pollution problem now that the rant and the audience participation did nothing to address.
Absolutely incredible show! The cast were fabulous and I loved how the audience were included as part of the town. A performance everyone should see!!
Thought provoking, innovative, exactly captures the current mood of Great Britain, disappointed, failed, fed up, sick of lies and fake news. I hope as many people as possible get the opportunity to see this fantastic production.
Absolutely fabulous production! By making it West End with a huge budget and star performance wages… the production kind of missed the point of the play. Perhaps that irony was intended? It would be great if it could be priced cheaply, government funded and then roll it out to schools. Excellent work.
This updated version of An Enemy of the People is outstanding. Matt Smith's performance is a tour de force. I whole heartedly recommend it.

Matt Smith: From Doctor Who to Doctor Stockmann
In Ibsen’s play of power and the public opinion, Doctor Stockmann (Matt Smith), expects to be hailed a hero for bringing critical information of water pollution to light, a discovery that could potentially save countless lives. However, his claims are met with scepticism and righteous fury as the townspeople question his motives for demanding the closure of the lucrative baths, and soon his character and intentions are called into question.
Opening next month, it’s the first time in half a decade that the multi-award-winning actor will tread the boards in the West End, but it isn’t the first time that Smith will play a controversial figure.
Since his last theatrical run in Lungs with The Crown co-star Claire Foy, Smith has portrayed numerous divisive characters, both real and fictional, from the late American photographer, Mapplethorpe, in a film of the same name, to the dragon riding, power-hungry prince in Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon.
