The Mousetrap: UK’s record-breaking play
During this phenomenal run, there have been no fewer than 297 actors and actresses appearing in the play, 86 miles of shirts have been ironed and over 320 tons of ice cream sold. Some cast members are in the Guinness Book of Records, David Raven as the ‘Most Durable Actor’ for 4,575 performances as Major Metcalf, and the late Nancy Seabrooke for a record-breaking 15 years as an understudy. The Mousetrap first entered the record books on 12th April 1958 when it became the longest-running show of any kind in the history of British Theatre.
How many endings does The Mousetrap have?
Contrary to popular belief, Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap only has one official ending. That’s right, unlike some other mysteries or thrillers that may have alternate endings, The Mousetrap has maintained its original conclusion since its debut in 1952. Theatregoers really have been able to keep the secret safe for over 70 years!
How much does it cost to see The Mousetrap?
The amount of money it costs to book Mousetrap tickets depends on where you sit and which day you see the show. Midweek performances, especially Tuesday-Thursday, are usually the most affordable dates.
Is The Mousetrap London the longest running play?
Yes, The Mousetrap is London’s longest-running play. It also holds the title of the longest-running play in the world. It premiered in London on 6 October 1952, at the Ambassadors Theatre, and later moved to the larger St. Martin’s Theatre in 1974, where it continues to run.
As of now, the play has been performed continuously for over 70 years, with tens of thousands of performances, making it a landmark in theatrical history. This remarkable longevity is a testament to its enduring appeal and the intrigue of its cleverly constructed murder mystery.
What is The Mousetrap and why is it so famous?
The Mousetrap is a murder mystery written by Agatha Christie, and holds the record as the world’s longest-running play. Set in a remote guesthouse during a snowstorm, it follows a group of strangers who discover that a murderer is among them, culminating in an unforgettable (and unmentionable - it is the best kept secret after all) ending. Audiences are asked to keep the ending secret, adding to the play’s intrigue.
The play’s fame stems from its longevity, Christie’s legacy as the “Queen of Crime,” and its classic whodunit format, which traps both characters and viewers in suspense. The Mousetrap has become a cultural institution, drawing generations of audiences with its clever storytelling and status as a quintessential London theatre experience. The biggest question surrounding the famous whodunnit is, why haven’t you booked your Mousetrap tickets yet?
What is the storyline of Mousetrap?
The Mousetrap is set in Monkswell Manor, a remote guesthouse cut off by a snowstorm. The guests, each travelling alone, enter the manor one by one. Despite their clashing personalities, they each try to make the most of their holiday. The peace is shattered when news breaks of a local murder, and the police warn that the killer may be headed their way. Tensions rise when a police officer arrives on skis to investigate, and the guests realise the murderer might already be among them.
As suspicions grow and secrets unravel, another murder occurs within the house, plunging everyone into chaos. The play builds to a dramatic climax, revealing the killer’s identity in a shocking twist. The mystery is a masterclass in suspense, full of red herrings, misdirection, and psychological intrigue, keeping audiences guessing until the final moment.
Which theatre is Mousetrap on at?
The Mousetrap is at St. Martins Theatre, where it has been running since 1974. Previous to this, the play had been running at the Ambassadors Theatre, the building directly opposite to its current home.

beautiful theatre, fabulous show, well acted and the story kept us guessing. Loved it.
I wish theatre was i little bit affordable nowadays! Apart from that, everything was amazing!
A good old murder mystery staged professionally by brilliant actors. A great experience.
Fantastic play! The actors were brilliant but in particularly Lara Lemon (Mollie) and Richard Leeming (Christopher Wren). Seats comfortable enough, pleased to stand at the interval and at the end. Lovely ice creams at half time, reasonably priced. Lovely programmes, reasonably priced. Theatre clean and tidy, staff welcoming and helpful.
I enjoyed it more than I expected . Not exactly Bucket List , but my hubby & I always intended to go & we liked the old theatre as well as the production .
We thoroughly enjoyed The Mousetrap! It even managed to exceed my expectations. The cast were brilliant and the theatre excellent in every respect. Very friendly, helpful staff.
Throughly enjoyable and a good evenings entertainment
A very good performance. The only problem was that on occasions we could not hear what the leading lady was saying.
I have wanted to see The Mousetrap for years and the performance didn’t disappoint. My only moan would be that the theatre is very cramped. The seats are narrow and I was sat next to quite a large gentleman who really had no choice but to take over part of my seat. However, that aside, it was a great afternoon’s entertainment.
Really enjoyable murder mystery.
Enjoyable play. The decor and layout of the theatre was a little claustrophobic
We arrived about 15 minutes late due to horrendous train cancellations and delays. However, expecting to be denied entry the staff were very nice and ushered us to our seats. Luckily we had end seats, so disruption was at a minimum. The play itself was absolutely fantastic. The 2 hours just flashed by. The acting was superb. All the characters were very believable. The whole play was done on just one set, but it worked brilliantly, helped along by some great sound and visual effects. St Martin's theatre was the perfect venue. It is quite small but gave a really great vibe to the whole event. Some American young ladies were commenting at the interval and were totally enthralled. They were gushing excitement. Only in the UK would you get such an experience. My wife worked out most of the whodunnit, but I was hopelessly wrong. Typical Agatha Christie. If you get the chance to see The Mousetrap, you should.

Meet the cast of The Mousetrap
Agatha Christie's The Mousetrap continues its unparalleled run at London's St. Martin's Theatre, captivating audiences with its intricate plot and rich history. Since its West End debut on November 25, 1952, the play has achieved remarkable milestones, including over 29,000 performances and more than 10 million tickets sold. In 1974, the production seamlessly transferred from the Ambassadors Theatre to St. Martin's Theatre without missing a single performance, showcasing the dedication of its team. To date, The Mousetrap has featured no fewer than 297 actors and actresses. Notably, David Raven holds the Guinness World Record as the 'Most Durable Actor' for his 4,575 performances as Major Metcalf, and the late Nancy Seabrooke set a record with her 15-year tenure as an understudy.
Under the direction of Philip Franks, who joined the production as director in May 2024, this enigmatic ensemble cast continues to uphold the legacy of The Mousetrap, ensuring its place as a cornerstone of West End theatre. The current cast brings fresh energy and talent to this timeless classic:
Who plays Mollie Ralston in The Mousetrap?
Lara Lemon takes on the role of Mollie Ralston. No stranger to an Agatha Christie thriller, Lemon was most recently seen in Witness for the Prosecution, where she delivered not just one, but two standout performances, taking on the roles of Greta and Clegg. Lemon's nuanced portrayal of Mollie adds depth to the character, drawing viewers into the suspenseful world of Monkswell Manor.
Who plays Giles Ralston in The Mousetrap?
Harry Bradley brings a dynamic energy to the stage in his performance as Giles Ralston. Audiences may recognize him from another long-running hit - The Play That Goes Wrong - where his comedic timing and versatility were on full display. Bradley's interpretation of Giles balances charm and tension, contributing significantly to the play's intricate narrative.
Who plays Christopher Wren in The Mousetrap?
Richard Leeming leaps into the shoes of the enigmatic and eccentric Christopher Wren. Recently seen in Regent Park Open Air Theatre’s production of Romeo & Juliet and The Haunting at New Vic, Leeming captures Wren's eccentricities and mystery, keeping audiences guessing about his true intentions.
Who plays Mrs. Boyle in The Mousetrap?
Rekha John-Cheriyan delivers a commanding performance as the stern and critical Mrs. Boyle. Her recent role in the national and international tour of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel showcased her ability to embody complex characters, and she brings the same depth to her portrayal of Mrs. Boyle, adding layers to the play's suspense.
Who plays Major Metcalf in The Mousetrap?
Owen Oakeshott takes on the role of Major Metcalf, infusing the character with authenticity and gravitas. Another Witness for the Prosecution alumni, Oakeshott demonstrated his unparalleled range in the courtroom thriller. Oakeshott's Major Metcalf is both reassuring and enigmatic, contributing to the play's intricate web of suspicion.

St. Martin's Theatre best seats and seating plan
London's charming St. Martin's Theatre has been a beacon of theatrical excellence for over a century. Since opening its doors in 1916, this historic venue has been home to countless unforgettable performances, including the legendary long-running show The Mousetrap. With a capacity of just over 550 seats, every show at St Martin's is an intimate experience. If you're planning a visit to witness the magic on stage, choosing the perfect seat can make all the difference. To ensure you have an optimal view of the captivating performances, keep reading to discover which seat will offer you the best vantage point and make your night truly memorable.
What are the best seats at the St. Martin's Theatre?
Starting with the Stalls, Row G seats are widely considered the most desirable in the theatre, thanks to the generous legroom provided by the aisle in front and an outstanding view of the full stage. However, the last three rows do experience some partial obstruction of the view due to the overhang from the Dress Circle.
Up in the Dress Circle, the rake provides excellent views even from the back row, but the front two rows offer some of the best sightlines in the theatre. Due to the more intimate scale of St Martin’s Theatre, the Dress Circle feels closer to the stage compared to larger West End venues. However, as with many historic theatres, legroom can be a bit limited.
The Upper Circle provides the most budget-friendly tickets in the theatre. Views from this section can feel distant, and the first few rows may be partially obstructed by a safety rail. Legroom tends to be quite cramped. Row H, while the furthest from the stage, offers slightly better legroom than most of the Upper Circle, making it a good option for taller patrons who are mindful of their budget.

The Mousetrap’s Miles Richardson tells us what makes his spring, spectacular
He may play a retired army general in The Mousetrap, but in real-life Miles Richardson is a (nature)lover, not a fighter. The eco-friendly thespian loves nothing more than enjoying the capital in bloom, taking in the wisteria and bluebells (and taking home any rubbish) on his journey to St Martin’s Theatre.
However, he may not have been making this commute if it wasn’t for his clean-shaven take on the Major! “The first thing [my wife] asked me when I found out I got the part was ‘would I have to grow any facial hair’. When I said No, she said I could do the job!” So, he was a whisker away from not clinching the part, literally!
We sat down with Miles to discuss songs, post-show drinks, and what makes his spring, spectacular.
