“Martin Shaw… perfect” Mail on Sunday ****
A number of television and theatre adaptations (including a ballet) have been made, celebrating this famous tale of a self-made man, shopkeeper, skinflint and boozer, written by Harold Brighouse.
Henry Hobson is a tyrant to his daughters and a stubborn man. When Maggie, his eldest daughter, opposes Hobson’s wishes by intending to marry Will Mossop, who works as a boot-maker bor Hobson, a battle of wills starts. Ultimately, he stands to lose his customers, his daughters and his pride, it is Hobson’s choice after all.
Martin Shaw, one of the UK’s favourite actors, will portray Henry Hobson. He is famous for starring in Judge John Deed, Inspector George Gently, and The Professionals on television. His theatre roles include Saturday, Sunday, Monday opposite Laurence Olivier. He also was a Tony Award nominee for An Ideal Husband on Broadway and won a Drama Desk award. Recent West End credits include A Man for All Seasons and Twelve Angry Men.
Naomi Frederick’s (Maggie Hobson) theatre credits include The Heresy of Love at The Globe and Made in Dagenham at the Adelphi Theatre. Bryan Dick’s (Willy Mossop) has appeared in Seminar at the Hampstead Theatre and The Alchemist at the National Theatre, and Gabrielle Dempsey’s (Vickey Hobson) is known for her appearance in The Rehearsal at the Chichester Festival Theatre and All My Sons, Embassy Theatre. Lastly, Joanna McCallum’s (Mrs Hepworth) has had a role in A Month in the Country at the Chichester Festival Theatre or The Importance of Being Ernest, Salisbury Playhouse. Christopher Timothy is the most recent announced cast member. In the 1960s, he was part of the Laurence Olivier's National Theatre company (The Master Builder, Oliver's Othello) and his other credits include Dial M for Murder, The Living Room or for TV, Doctors.
Design is by Simon Higlett; lighting design is by Tim Mitchell; sound design is by Mike Walker; and the composer is Matthew Scott.

Review: Hobson's Choice At The Vaudeville Theatre
Hobson's Choice, currently playing at London's Vaudeville Theatre, is quite an underwhelming show. It is an extremely gentle comedy which, if it was a TV series, would almost certainly be played on a Sunday afternoon. There is nothing in the show that makes a huge impact but, equally, there is nothing wrong with the show; it potters along pleasantly, just without the same kick that a lot of West End shows have. The show is celebrating its one-hundredth anniversary, so perhaps it has just dated a little.
