Facts and critical acclaim
- The Nutcracker is adapted from the 1816 novel Nutcracker and the King of Mice by T.A Hoffmann. The base material is far darker than the ballet and had to be considerably edited to make it the family friendly show it is today!
- Tchaikovsky based the "voice" of the Sugar Plum Fairy on a new instrument he discovered in Paris: the celesta. He also used children's toys as instruments throughout the piece.
- Arielle Smith is an Olivier award winning choreographer who was listed as one of The Guardians Ones to Watch and named one of The Stage’s 25 individuals to become future theatre stars. English National Ballet’s Artistic Director, Aaron S. Watkin won the prestigious Erik Bruhn Award and has directed pieces across the world, including France and Russia.
