From 14 August 2024, recent graduate Vasco Emauz will make his West End debut as ‘future boy’ Marty McFly. He will be joined by Orlando Gibbs (Mr Burns: A post-electric play), as George McFly, C.J. Borger (Kristin Chenoweth: An Evening With Friends In Honor Of Todd Haimes) as Goldie Wilson and Marvin Berry, Alex Runicles (The Choir Of Man US and Canada Tour) as Biff Tannen, Talia Palamathanan (Everybody’s Talking About Jamie) as Jennifer Parker, Ellis Kirk (Heathers the Musical) as alternate Marty McFly and Liam McHugh (Grease the Musical) as Dave McFly. Joining the ensemble are Kofi Aidoo-Appiah, Billie Bowman and Gracie Caine.

They will star alongside returning cast members Cory English as Doctor Emmett Brown, Sarah Goggin as Lorraine Baines, Lee Ormsby as Strickland and alternate Doctor Emmett Brown and Patricia Wilkins as Linda McFly, and ensemble members, Ella Beaumont, Sia Dauda, Alexander Day, Helen Gulston, Matthew Ives, Connor Lewis, Adam Margilewski, Bryan Mottram, Anna Murray, Samuel Nicholas, Louis Quinn, Zachkiel Smith, Grace Swaby-Moore and Alexandra Wright.

Great Scott! Get ready for 1.21 gigawatts of charged-up musical theatre power, as Back to the Future the Musical electrifies audiences at the Adelphi Theatre. Based on the 1985 film of the same name, Back to the Future: The Musical sees Marty McFly, a heartfelt, hapless teenager who goes back to 1955 with a mad scientist. Can the pair return to reality and discover what it means to be a good person?

It's Only a Matter of Time

Welcome to Hill Valley, California. In this 1980s small-town suburb, everyone’s living happily ever after. Listen closely to the lyrics, and you’ll pick up on references about turbo boosters and what the future could hold. 

Got No Future

Poor Marty McFly. He’s trying hard to be himself and he wants to perform at his high school talent show. After a few rocking guitar licks, Principal Strickland doesn’t think it’s a good idea. What he doesn’t know - but you’ll realise when you hear Got No Future - is that 'Got No Future' bears an uncanny resemblance to 'The Power of Love', later performed by Marty McFly and the Pinheads. 

Wherever We're Going

Marty’s a typical teenager. He’s head-over-heels for his high school friend, Jennifer Parker. In 'Wherever We’re Going', these loved-up teens promise to be by each other’s side… Unfortunately for Marty, it’s not for long.

Hello – Is Anybody Home?

When you meet Marty’s dad, you’ll get an immediate insight into the McFly’s family dynamics. George McFly is often taunted by Biff Tannen; he’s bigger, stronger, and has George wound around his little finger. Marty wants George to be a confident man, instead of shying away. So by asking if anybody is home, Marty wonders if anyone will actually do anything beyond their town.

It Works

Welcome Doc Brown! In this part of the show, Doc and Marty meet in 1985 and the time-travelling plans are revealed. The flux capacitor works, the plutonium is there, and the DeLorean is kitted out. Now, all that’s left to do is select a date and drive there. And because Back to the Future is now a musical, cue the bevvy of dancing women to accompany Doc Brown. It works!

Audiences - and Marty McFly - crash into 1950s Hill Valley in style. Although Marty’s travelled 30 years back in time to 21st October 1955, he recognises a fair bit around him. During the song, the Hill Valley residents view him as a newcomer. But he’s not a stranger. They’re the strangers to him! 

Gotta Start Somewhere

As Marty steps inside the Hill Valley diner, he meets a younger Mayor Goldie Wilson. But in 1955, Goldie isn’t a mayor, he’s a busboy. Goldie and Marty chat about their hopes, leading Goldie to burst into a gospel-fused number about achieving everything you set your mind to.

My Myopia

It’s not just the Hill Valley residents that Marty’s meeting for the first time (again). It’s his parents. Yes, Marty McFly goes back in time to a world where he wasn’t born but must watch how his parents fell in love. Weird! 

In 'My Myopia', Marty's father, George, sings about his feelings for Lorraine, and how he wishes they could be together. 

Pretty Baby

We know all about George’s feelings for Lorraine. And in 'Pretty Baby', Marty hears the reciprocated feelings from his mother-to-be, in his mother’s childhood bedroom. Add a new nickname (Calvin Klein, based on his underwear) to the mix, and the result is pretty surreal. 

Future Boy

A short while after time-travelling, Marty’s slowly getting used to his surroundings. But he’d like to return to the real world, and fast. When Marty heads over to Doc Brown, Marty confides with the scientist that he’s scared he’ll never live a normal life. 'Future Boy' is all about reshaping your past and future, and how they’ll generate 1.21 gigawatts of energy.

Something About That Boy

Lorraine can’t believe her luck. She had a boy in her bedroom and he was attractive! It’s a pity then for Lorraine that this boy is a younger Marty McFly, a kid that’d turn out to be her son. At the same time, school bully Biff Tannen shares his feelings for Marty and George. 'Something About That Boy' is really about all the boys, depending on who you’re rooting for.

The dream continues, fellow dreamers! The critically acclaimed Olivier, WhatsOnStage and Broadway World Award-winning Best New Musical, Back to the Future, has hit 88 mph and is hurtling towards its fourth year. The sci-fi smash-hit will now run at the Adelphi Theatre until 27 July 2025, and will see some new faces in the familiar orange life preserver and 3D specs…

Who are the current members of London’s Back to the Future musical cast?

The current main cast members are; Ben Joyce, Cory English, Sarah Goggin, Oliver Nicholas, Jay Perry, Sophie Naglik, Jordan Pearson, Lee Ormsby, Rodri Watkins, and Patricia Wilkins. The company also includes Elliot Evans and Stephen Leask as alternates, plus a supporting cast.

Who plays Marty McFly in the West End?

At present, Ben Joyce is Marty McFly in Back To The Future The Musical with Elliott Evans as alternate Marty. The role was originated by Olly Dobson who earned nominations at the 2021 WhatsOnStage and Olivier Awards for Best Actor in a Musical.

Ben Joyce

Ben Joyce has played ‘80s teen since summer 2022. Having graduated from Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts in 2021, Ben quickly made his West End debut as Frankie Valli in Jersey Boys at Trafalgar Studios. The Welsh actor has also been involved in workshops for Catch Me If You Can and The Little Big Things. He also appeared in Amazon Prime’s The Power in 2021.

Elliott Evans

Elliott Evans is the current understudy for the leading role. His previous credits include Eugene in Euigenius! at The Turbine Theatre, Jack in Assembly Hall Theatre’s Jack and the Beanstalk, and Kyle in KIN the Musical at Factory Playhouse Hitchin. He’s been the alternate Marty McFly since August 2023.

Who plays Doc Brown in London?

Cory English has played Doc Brown since 2023 replacing Roger Bart who originated the role. Bart won the WhatsOnStage Award for Best Supporting Performer in a Male Identifying Role in a Musical in 2022 and earned a nomination at the Olivier Awards the same year. Stephen Leask is the current alternate for Doc Brown.

Cory English

Cory English jumped out of the Delorean and onto the stage as the eccentric Emmett (Doc) Brown in 2023. Before taking the role permanently, he covered the live wire scientist for his predecessor, Roger Bart, during Bart’s absence. The New York-born actor has had an illustrious career in both the West End and Broadway having starred in shows like Chicago, Guys and Dolls, The Producers, and Young Frankenstein. 

Stephen Leask

Before joining the Back To The Future The Musical cast, Stephen Leask starred in West End shows such as School of Rock (Gillian Lynne Theatre) and Waitress (Adelphi Theatre). Along with his extensive theatre credits, Leask has been involved with Andrew Lloyd Webber and Richard Curtis’ new musical, Unmasked, plus TV shows such as Silo and Call The Midwife.

The Adelphi Theatre opened in December 1930, built by architect Ernest Schaufelberg, and is a Grade II listed building and over its three level auditorium seats 1,500 people. The venue which originally stood on the site of the current Adelphi Theatre, the Sans Pareil Theatre, was demolished in 1850 and rebuilt remaining open for 40 years until it was modified to the point where the building was barely recognisable. The theatre soon became the Adelphi Theatre in 1819 and then was renamed the Royal Adelphi Theatre in 1829 until, after much public pressure the theatre dropped the “Royal” prefix in 1940. Early performances featured the musical Evergreen, Noel Coward's Word and Music and Cole Porter's Nymph Errant, as well as a revival of Ivor Novello's musical comedy The Dancing Years which ran for a total of 969 performances. In more recent years Chicago became the theatres longest running show to date making way for Evita’s arrival in 2006, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat in 2007 and Love Never Dies in 2010, and the world premiere of The Bodyguard in 2012.

What are the best seats at the Adelphi Theatre?

The auditorium retains the classic horseshoe shape of theatres dating back to earlier than the Art Deco style of the Adelphi Theatre. Seating 1,500 patrons across the Stalls, Dress Circle and Upper Circle, the best views of the stage being from the middle section of the stalls and front rows of the dress circle. The stalls seats over 650 patrons and is set just below stage level, divided by a central aisle from row K to the rear of the auditorium, so patrons in the first few rows will look up in order to see the action on the stage. Leg room in the front section of the stalls is limited, becoming more spacious from the mid-section back. The Dress Circle, sited a floor above the stalls, is close to the stage and overhangs the Stalls. The Upper Circle, the third floor of the auditorium, overhangs the dress circle from approximately the fifth row backwards and is the furthest in distance from the stage. A safety rail at the front of this section can obstruct views from the first two rows, although the majority of seats in the front section of the upper circle offer the better views, the rear of this section provides more leg room.

Roads? Where they’re going, they don’t need roads! The Olivier award-winning musical will be making like a tree and staying firmly rooted to the Adelphi Theatre until 22 December 2024.

The Back To The Future trilogy left a lasting impact on popular culture by giving millions worldwide a glimpse of the limitless potential of time travel and left them wondering if their predictions of the future could come true. Back to the Future Day honours the series by being celebrated on October 21 2015, a future date that Marty McFly travels to on one of his existential adventures.
